Shamanic Astrology
Shamanic Astrology is the term I use for the process of Re-Visioning your Future and Trans-Figuring your Life-Story. Traditionally the Shaman acted as an intermediary with the realm of Spirit -as a sort of Psychopomp -or "Guide of Souls." Hermes or Mercury served in this role for the Greeks and Romans -and he is strong in my chart. Mercury is at heliacal setting, which means visually Mercury stands at the Gate to the Underworld. Chiron, the modern planet associated with shamanism, sits at 0 Aries in my chart -at the foundation point of the tropical Zodiac.Dali's Hermes
In Jungian psychology, the psychopomp or "soul conductor" is a mediator between the unconscious and conscious realms. In more practical terms, the Shaman is an intermediary for those who lose their sense of personal power and cease to grow. The Shaman was also once lost this way –but found a way back and re-integrated his personal power. (To read about some of my personal Shamanic Journey you may click here).
The Shamanic experience and journey is absolutely individual, so the Shaman cannot simply or directly tell you the way back. They can only use their own experiences and broad knowledge of myths to point you to a doorway in consciousness –but it is up to you to walk through it –and to trust the experience to transform you. A great example of how this works comes from the movie "The Legend of Bagger Vance."
... Inside each and every one of us is one true authentic swing... Somethin' we was born with... Somethin' that's ours and ours alone... Somethin' that can't be taught to ya or learned... Somethin' that got to be remembered... Over time the world can rob us of that swing... It gets buried inside us under all our wouldas and couldas and shouldas... Some folk even forget what their swing was like...
Put your eyes on Bobby Jones... Look at his practice swing, almost like he's searchin' for something... Then he finds it... Watch how he settles hisself right into the middle of it, feel that focus... He got a lot of shots he could choose from... Duffs and tops and skulls, there's only ONE shot that's in perfect harmony with the field... One shot that's his, authentic shot, and that shot is gonna choose him... There's a perfect shot out there tryin' to find each and every one of us... All we got to do is get ourselves out of its way, to let it choose us... You can't see that flag as some dragon you got to slay... You got to look with soft eyes... See the place where the tides and the seasons and the turnin' of the Earth, all come together... where everything that is, becomes One... You got to seek that place with your Soul ... Seek it with your hands don't think about it... Feel it... Your hands is wiser than your head ever gonna be... Now I can't take you there ... Just hopes I can help you find a way... Just you... that ball... that flag... and all you are...
Bob Dylan once said :"He who is not busy being born is busy dying." What he meant by this is that someone who is not constantly re-inventing themselves will soon find themselves trapped in a story where there is no room for growth -and when we cease to grow we cease to truly live. We must constantly harken for and answer what Joseph Campbell called the Hero's "Call to Adventure." We must seek to be Re-born!
We can use the Archetypes to facilitate beginning the three-step process of transformation that is symbolized in Astrology as well as alchemy, mysticism, shamanism and even the physical birth process! It is simple and profound. Re-birth mirrors Birth.
